It’s often said that one should stick to one’s own concerns, and perhaps this issue isn't technically mine, but living in and observing Indonesia has stirred a deep, unavoidable feeling in me. I feel compelled to speak up about this archipelago nation—a land so incredibly rich, yet whose people seem to endure hardship that feels entirely unnecessary.
Indonesia is a geological marvel, blessed with a staggering abundance of natural resources: vast mineral deposits, lush agricultural lands, towering rainforests, and rich maritime territories. By all measures of potential wealth, its people should be living in widespread prosperity. If these assets were managed honestly and with true commitment to the nation’s future, the mandate of achieving a prosperous, just society would be a reality, not just a distant dream.
Sadly, the reality on the ground tells a different, much darker story. The trust placed in those meant to steward this bounty has been repeatedly and systemically betrayed. Decades of large-scale corruption—a corrosive, institutionalized cancer—have continuously siphoned away the nation's wealth. This is not just a matter of isolated incidents; it’s a culture of impunity that has robbed billions from public funds intended for infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
The result of this negligence and greed is heartbreaking. A country with so much promise is held back, witnessing environmental damage on a massive scale, and suffering a significant regression in national development. The wealth remains concentrated in the hands of a few, while countless citizens struggle with poverty and lack of basic services.
To my friends and fellow citizens of Indonesia: This is your home, and its future rests with you. This critical moment demands more than just silent observation. You must find your voice, you must demand accountability, and you must act. If the people remain passive, if you do not mobilize and speak truth to power, the potential ruin of this magnificent country—the loss of its promise and its true prosperity—will be an unavoidable tragedy. It is time to stand up and reclaim what is rightfully yours.
I offer my deepest condolences for the devastating flash floods that have struck Indonesia, especially the regions of Sumatra and Aceh. May all victims be granted kindness, ease, and a swift recovery.
The evidence that has emerged points to the greed of corrupt officials and avaricious rulers, which has caused the people to suffer and lose everything. Immediately declare this a national disaster! Investigate and prosecute those responsible. Immediately declare this a national disaster!
Oh my gosh, I totally missed this news! This environmental injustice is addressed with high urgency in Greta Thunberg's The Climate Book. She describes how countries and people which are the most affected are at the whims of the most powerful, which she names the Global North. The book is a difficult read at times, but we must know the truth. Anyway, I am contacting organizations now to find out the best source to send help. It seems that disasters never end these days.
